At Sunderland Youth and Community Orchestra, we bring people together through music, fostering inclusivity, accessibility, and a deep sense of community. Open to all ages and abilities, we celebrate diversity and engage in performances across Sunderland, making music a shared experience for everyone.
But don’t just take our would for it! Here are some testimonies from current and former members of the orchestra:
“My son has been playing with the orchestra for three years, and he loves it! He’s had many opportunities to perform, playing both modern and classical music, in some amazing venues. But the best thing about it is the people. The group is so friendly and encouraging that we’ve both made some friends for life. I might have to take up an instrument so I can join too!”

“As a child I had learned classical guitar but in hindsight should have chosen an orchestral instrument. Many years ago I acquired a cheap clarinet and in 2020, just before COVID-19 lockdown, my friend and I started to teach ourselves how to play for fun. The opportunity then arose to join Sunderland Youth and Community Orchestra, a group which requires you to have no prior experience or qualifications except the enthusiasm to come along, join in and give it a go. It is a great mix of ages and abilities and everyone brings something to the group, whatever their experience. Since I have been a member we have worked on pieces that I would have considered well above my ability level, however, I do believe that being part of the orchestra has improved my skill and ability much faster than if I had continued to learn under my own steam. Being a member of Sunderland Youth and Community Orchestra is a great way to put the learning into practice – and much more fun to do it with friends. It’s never too late to give it a go. You may surprise yourself!!”

“When I picked up the cello as an adult learner, an orchestra member invited me to drop by. It was such a great opportunity to get to play with others in a group. And now 10 years have just flown by!”
